Los dos mellizos was published twice in the Sephardic language in a short period of time: in Salonica (1907) and Jerusalem (1908). This edition transcribes the latter into Latin characters.

With the motif of religious tolerance in the background, this novel describes life in Jewish communities in Central Europe in the middle of the 19th century and also contributes to the understanding of the Jewish cultural universe at the time of its publication.

1907-1908 was a period of great social and political change in the countries under Ottoman rule, similar to that of the European states in the middle of the 19th Century. Through the story of twins educated in different religions, the author touches upon some of the most pressing problems that affected the Jewish world as it tried to leave the ghettos with their limited religious-familiar lifestyle: the questions of assimilation and the tolerance necessary to live in peace together with Gentiles.
